Cork is a material that never ceases to surprise. We know its insulating qualities — that's what made its reputation in wine stoppers — but its properties go far beyond. Lightweight, ultra-resistant, soft to the touch like velvet, cork is also naturally waterproof. Why is cork not afraid of water?

The answer is scientific. Cork is composed of more than 50% of a natural substance called suberin — a vegetable wax that lines each cell of the cork and makes it naturally water-repellent. This is exactly the same reason why cork oak bark has protected the tree from bad weather for millions of years.

Specifically, on an Oak Forest cork bag, water does not penetrate — it beads and slides over the surface without leaving a trace. No need for waterproofing, no chemical treatment, no special care before going out in the rain. The protection is integrated into the material itself.

How to clean a cork bag?

This is the most frequent question from our customers, and the answer will surprise them with its simplicity.

What you need:

• A soft, non-abrasive cloth
• Warm water
• A little Marseille soap or neutral soap

The 3-step procedure:

1. Lightly dampen your cloth — it should not be soaked, just damp
2. Gently rub the area to be cleaned with a little neutral soap
3. Wipe with a second clean cloth and let air dry, away from direct sunlight

That's all. No specific cleaner, no leather product, no waterproofing spray. Natural cork doesn't need it.

What you should never do:

• Use aggressive chemicals or household detergents — they can alter the natural shade of the cork
• Submerge the bag in water or put it under a tap
• Rub with an abrasive sponge or a hard brush
• Expose the bag to direct heat to dry it (hair dryer, radiator)

What if my bag has a slight discoloration? As cork is a natural material, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can slightly alter its shade over time — just like natural wood would. This gives it a patinated appearance that testifies to its authenticity. To slow down this process, store your bag away from direct light when not in use.

Can you carry your cork bag in the rain? Yes, without any restriction. Cork is naturally waterproof — which is precisely why it has been used for centuries for bottle stoppers. A downpour will not harm it.

Should a cork bag be waterproofed? No. Unlike natural leather which requires regular treatment, cork does not need any waterproofing product. Its protection is integrated into its very structure.
